I’m going to tell you something you probably weren’t expecting from a naturopathic doctor… I hate stepping on scales. Every time I do it, I get that tiny knot in my stomach right before the number pops up. But I still step on anyway.
Why?

When we first got our InBody Scale at the clinic, I hopped on just to get a baseline. Nothing glamorous, just data. I told myself it was no different than getting bloodwork done.
A few months later, I stepped on again, bracing myself… only to see something unexpectedly exciting. I had gained muscle. My weight hadn’t changed, but my muscle mass had. Does your bathroom scale tell you that? Probably not.
Most at-home scales give you one lonely number: weight. Full stop. That little number is wildly overrated. No nuance. No context. No credit for the hard work your body is doing behind the scenes.
Your home scale can’t tell you why you feel stronger. Or where you’re losing fat. Or how your metabolism is changing. It just throws a number at you, and let’s be honest, your imagination fills in the rest, and she is a drama queen.
That’s where more advanced body composition tools come in, like the InBody Scale we use at the clinic. These scales tell you what actually matters:
Visceral fat The deep fat around your organs that affects metabolic health. You can’t pinch it, but it makes a difference. A regular scale will never show you this. Visceral fat is a sign of insulin resistance, the precursor to diabetes. It tells us you have large swings in your blood sugar over the course of the day, and extended periods of time with elevated blood sugar. This sugar needs to go somewhere. If it’s not entering cells because your insulin isn’t working, then your body stores it as fat. Improving or reversing insulin resistance will mean your visceral fat level can decline.
Percent body fat Two people can weigh the same but have completely different health pictures when their muscle and fat are weighed.
Skeletal muscle mass Muscle is metabolic gold. It can increase your weight while dramatically improving your health. Watching this number rise? Inspiring.
But let’s talk about something even more accessible, a tool everyone forgets about, even though it’s free and sitting in your drawer. A soft measuring tape. You can use it to take actual measurements in inches. To track your progress and never stand on a scale if that’s your preferred method of tracking. Measure:
Biceps
Waist
Hips
Thighs
Record them, and check again in 4-week intervals.
If you’ve never tracked this way before, hear me when I say that it can feel magical. You can lose inches long before the scale budges. That’s not failure, that’s body re-composition. The holy grail of long-term health.
If you’ve never heard of the InBody Scale, you can learn more on their website. At our clinic, we offer free scans as part of your consultation.
Want a scan outside a visit? We can absolutely do that too, it's a $25 standalone service, and you’ll take home a copy of your results to share with your personal trainer, naturopathic doctor, dietitian, nutritionist, whoever’s on your team.
If you’re ready for data that actually moves the needle, reach out. We’d love to help you see what your body’s really been up to.
