Feel Better, Naturally with Acupuncture Services at PCNM
At Peterborough Centre of Naturopathic Medicine (PCNM), we are proud to offer acupuncture services, designed to assist your body to cure itself naturally and gently. Derived from ancient Chinese medicine and healing techniques, our acupuncture service is tailor-made for each individual. We take the time to understand your specific concerns and set a personalized plan just for you.

How Does Acupuncture Actually Work?
Acupuncture is an ancient healing technique rooted in traditional Chinese medicine. It involves the precise placement of fine, sterile needles into designated points across the body. This practice is founded on the concept of Qi (pronounced “chee”)—the vital life force believed to circulate through pathways known as meridians. When this energy becomes blocked or unbalanced, it can manifest as pain or illness.

Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years to great effect, such as:

-
Calm the nervous system
-
Relieve pain and tension
-
Improve digestion
-
Balance hormones
-
Boost energy
-
Help you sleep
In short? It helps your body get back into a state of balance. And most people find it surprisingly relaxing—some even fall asleep during treatment!

What Can You Expect During Your Acupuncture Appointment at PCNM

At PCNM, we go the extra mile to ensure you are completely relaxed and fully briefed on the procedure. Instead of treating it as a medical procedure, we truly believe that your session is a chance to step away from the demands of daily life. We encourage our clients to close their eyes, take a few deep breaths, and unwind as the body’s natural healing takes over. In fact, many patients describe the experience as profoundly calming and restorative.
During your acupuncture appointment, our experienced acupuncturist or naturopathic doctor will gently place single-use, sterilized needles into specific points tailored to your unique concerns and treatment goals. These needles typically remain in place for about 15 to 30 minutes. The whole procedure flows as follows:

Step 1: We Talk
The first appointment is a relaxed, in-depth discussion. Your story is important to us—what you have tried, what is working, and what is not.

Step 2: We Plan
This is where the actual treatment plan is made for you. However, the treatment plan will vary based on your goals and how your body responds, but will typically be 6-10 sessions in the beginning.

Step 3: You Relax
During the treatment session, you lie down calmly as your practitioner inserts the needles. Most people begin to feel totally calm or even sleepy during the treatment. We have a little check-in afterward and make any adjustments and provide guidance for what to do next.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does acupuncture actually do?

Acupuncture works by stimulating specific points on the body, which trigger a cascade of responses in the nervous, immune, and endocrine systems.

When a needle is inserted into an acupuncture point, it activates sensory nerve fibers that send signals to the spinal cord and brain. This neural activation prompts the release of natural chemicals in the body, such as endorphins (your body’s natural painkillers), serotonin, and other neurotransmitters that help reduce pain, improve mood, and support the body's natural healing processes.

At the site of needle insertion, acupuncture also affects the connective tissue and encourages the release of signaling molecules that influence nearby immune and nerve cells. This increases blood flow, reduces inflammation, and promotes local healing.

Acupuncture further supports your health by regulating the autonomic nervous system, balancing the sympathetic (fight-or-flight) and parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) responses. This can help improve digestion, sleep, circulation, and overall homeostasis.

In short, acupuncture promotes healing and balance by engaging your body’s own internal systems, making it a powerful tool for pain relief, stress reduction, and restoring overall wellness.

How many sessions of acupuncture do you need?
It depends on your condition—some people feel relief after 1–2 sessions, while chronic issues may need 6–12 or more for lasting results.

How much should I pay for acupuncture in Ontario?
Expect to pay around $80–$130 per session. Prices vary based on practitioner experience and clinic location.

How quickly do you see results from acupuncture?
Acupuncture results vary based on each individual. While some feel immediate relief, others notice gradual improvement over several sessions.

Is it worth getting acupuncture?
YES!

Does acupuncture help weight loss?
It can support weight loss by curbing cravings, reducing stress, and improving digestion—but it's most effective alongside healthy habits. At PCNM, we provide that support, by way of tailored plans, vitamin IV therapies, naturopathic medicine, support groups and more.

What can be treated by acupuncture?
Here are some of them: pain, headaches, anxiety, digestive issues, insomnia, hormonal imbalances, and even the side effects of cancer treatments.
